I have nothing to hide – Obiano reacts to EFCC watchlist

The Anambra State Government has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of inelegantly acting the script of those who unsuccessfully canvassed for emergency rule in the State and were thereafter, badly defeated in the November 6 Guber Election.

Media reports were rife yesterday that the outgoing Governor, Willie Obiano has been placed on the Commission’s watchlist as his tenure draws to an end on March 17, 2022.

In a press statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, C. Don Adinuba, he reiterated that Governor Obiano, will be ready to answer questions about his service record when invited.

EFCC’s Inelegant Drama over Anambra Governor

1. Nigerians were dismayed that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) went a new low on Wednesday, November 24, 2021, when it sponsored media reports claiming that it has placed Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State on its watch list. The EFCC provided no details of how Governor Obiano has been placed on its watch list, but made a reference to a letter it purportedly wrote on November 15, 2021, to the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) asking it to inform the anti-graft agency anytime the Governor is travelling out of the country.

2. Everything that can be wrong with politically motivated statements like this one is obviously wrong with this statement. The EFCC knows fully well that it is acting inelegantly in this instance, and so has tried as much as possible not to make an official public statement on the alleged placing of Chief Obiano on the watch list. It furtively gave a section of the media the news report it wrote based on ostensibly its letter to the NIS on November 15.

3. Governor Obiano is out of the country currently. And he travelled through one of the country’s international airports. He did not disguise himself, but rather left the country with his identity fully disclosed at the necessary immigration point.

4. The EFCC sounded more inelegant when it claimed in the sponsored press report that it received intelligence reports that the Governor plans to “flee” from Nigeria once he hands over power next March 17 to the newly-elected Anambra State Governor, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo. Chief Obiano has never left any person(s) in doubt that he will relocate to his base in the United States once he finishes his tenure. As early as August 31, 2020, he announced his decision to a meeting of the Anambra State Council of Elders, comprising such personages as the erstwhile Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Chief Emeka Anyaoku; the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe who is also the chairman of both the Anambra State Council of Traditional Rulers and the Southeast Council of Traditional Rulers; a former Anambra State Governor, Dr Chukwuemeka Ezeife; an ex-Minister of Women Affairs, Iyom Josephine Anenih, mni; the founding Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Professor Elochukwu Amucheazi; the Archbishop-Emeritus of the Anglican Church in Anambra State, The Most Reverend Dr Maxwell Samuel Chukwunweike Anikwenwa; and the Catholic Bishop of the Awka Diocese, Rev Dr Paulinus Ezeokafor.

5. Governor Obiano has a whole four months to remain in office as the Anambra State Chief Executive. Nobody in Nigeria can circumscribe his constitutionally conferred immunity which shields him from both criminal and civil prosecution. The EFCC went too far to announce in November that it is observing him. We are not aware of any State Governor who had up to four months to be in office and the EFCC went on to sponsor media reports that he was being investigated.

6. It is, indeed strange that the EFCC is making a show that it is investigating a high public officer. Anti-corruption agencies, like intelligence services, conduct their investigations discreetly, and not on pages of newspapers. Media trial has never benefitted the EFCC.

7. The whole nation knows those behind all the present histrionics about Obiano. They are those who didn’t want the November 6 election to hold. They are those in high places who unsuccessfully canvassed for emergency rule in Anambra supposedly on security grounds. They are those who masterminded the Birnin Kudu High Court charade in Jigawa State over the APGA leadership and, more importantly, the authentic APGA candidate in the November Gubernatorial Election in Anambra State. They are those responsible for the sacrilege of a Customary Court in Abuja issuing criminal summons to Professor Soludo, a former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor. These people are still fighting the gubernatorial battle on behalf of their badly defeated friends and political associates in the Anambra vote. They will fail badly, as they have done in the recent past.

8. The EFCC should not allow itself to be used by politicians who are mere birds of passage. Its ongoing Anambra drama is in bad taste. It did not serve Governor Obiano any notice. Nor did it invite him to answer questions about his service record. It just went to the press. Yet, the Governor is willing to answer any question(s) about his years in office. After all, he has received a prestigious award from the United Nations Development Programme for transparency.

God bless Anambra State.

GOVERNMENT OF IMO STATE OF NIGERIA

OFFICE OF THE HONOURABLE ATTORNEY & COMMISSIONER FOR JUSTICE

MINISTRY OF JUSTICE

PRESS RELEASE

THE ATTORNEY GENERAL OF IMO STATE IS NOT INVOLVED IN ANY CHILD TRAFFICKING MATTER

The attention of the Honourable Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Imo State has been drawn to the malicious, procured and orchestrated news item being circulated by media outfits suggesting that the Honourable Attorney General of Imo State is subverting Justice in a case of child trafficking for which he has been summoned by a Magistrate Court for explanation. We are also aware that this is a fall out of a Press Conference granted by one Igboayaka O. Igboayaka of the acclaimed Ohaneze Youth Council, who made the erroneous and unfounded allegations against the Chief Law officer of Imo State.

While the Attorney General is not surprised over the continued evil orchestration against his person by opposition elements with parochial intent to serve, he is however surprised that responsible media establishments could go to town with such false and malicious news without first seeking clarification from the office of the Attorney General. It is important to note that the office of the Attorney General is vested with the full constitutional powers of prosecution in the State with the right to determine who to prosecute, when to prosecute and where to prosecute. He also has the unquestionable right to review all cases pending in court to determine whether to continue the prosecution or to withdraw same. The present Attorney General of Imo State is a seasoned legal practitioner who will not be taught how to exercise his powers by merchants of preconceived intentions. Every citizen of Imo State standing trial in our courts is presumed innocent until proven guilty and the instruments of the state legal processes will not lend itself into any attempt to find any person guilty before the end of his or her trial. The office of the Honourable Attorney General cannot also be blackmailed or hastened into making a wrong decision in any matter as it’s decisions are usually made after seriously thought-out legal opinion by the State Legal officers.

Categorically, the office of the Imo Attorney General holds as follows:

1. That it has recalled from the courts, the case files in the following charges:

(a). OW/505C/2021 – Cop. Vs. Ohanyere Lilian & Anor.

(b). OW/562/2021 – Cop. Vs. Anayo Don & Anor.

(c). OW/54C/2021 – Cop. Vs. Ebuzoaju

2. That the office of the Director of Public Prosecution will review the case files and present the Attorney General with appropriate legal opinions on the cases.

3. That presently, the Attorney General has not ruled out the possibility of sending the casefiles back to the Police for proper investigation in view of the petitions received from the suspects on the nature of special interest interference in the investigation into the matter by the former SARS Commander.

4. That further investigations on the matter may lead to the conduct of a DNA test if found necessary.

Furthermore, it is instructive to mention that the Honourable Attorney General of Imo State was not summoned by any Magistrate to appear before her for any explanation as regards the case of child trafficking. Rather, the Court invited the office of the Attorney General as represented by the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) to clarify the Court with the decision whether to continue the case at the Magistrate Court or arraign the suspects on information before the High Court in accordance with the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Imo State.

This clarification has become necessary because of the wrong impression conveyed by the malicious and mischievous presentation of the reports by some media and Internet news platforms.

The Attorney General of Imo State will continue to strive for a better Imo State where the rule of law reigns Supreme. And we seize this medium to plead with mischief makers to henceforth, stop these unwarranted attacks on the office and person of the Attorney General of Imo State.

Thank you and God bless you all.

Buhari is unpatriotic to Nigeria – Ohanaeze Chieftain

A former National Publicity Secretary of the `Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chuks Ibegbu, has described President Muhammadu Buhari as an unpatriotic Nigerian.

Ibegbu claimed that Buhari was more patriotic and loyal to Niger Republic than Nigeria, where he is the president.

Further speaking, the former Ohanaeze spokesman, said Buhari would retire to Niger Republic in 2023 due to his loyalty to the country.

Buhari’s loyalty to Niger Republic, was behind the decision to construct a railway line from Katsina State to Maradi, Ibegbu said.

He recounted how Buhari, during his tenure as Military Head of State supported a candidate from Niger Republic for a position of the African Union Secretary General, ahead of a Nigerian.

Nigeria is currently constructing a 284 kilometers standard gauge rail line enabling interconnectivity between Nigeria and Niger Republic.

When completed, the railway line worth over $2 billion would connect Nigeria with countries in the West Africa sub-region for the promotion of trade and commerce.

However, Ibegbu said: “When he was the Military Head of State, there was an opening for the position of the Secretary of the African Union, and instead of supporting his fellow compatriot, Peter Ornu from Nigeria, he supported one Umaru, a Fulani man from Niger Republic as the Head of State of a country.

“So, his loyalty is not to Nigeria, but to Niger Republic, and this is why he is building a rail line worth $2billion from Katsina to Maradi.

“As soon as his tenure ends, he will return to his country which is Niger Republic.

“Mind you, most of the people ruling us are not Nigerians. Sani Abacha is not a Nigerian, he is from Northern Cameroon. Gowon, Obasanjo, IBB, Gen Abubakar are Nigerians but the others are not.”
