NDLEA Arrests Stephen Ikeanyionwu In Lagos Church, Man Excretes Heroin

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have arrested a suspected drug dealer, Stephen Ikeanyionwu, who was declared wanted for allegedly attempting to export 69 kilograms of cocaine, heroin and cannabis to the United Kingdom through the NAHCO export shed of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport at Ikeja, Lagos.

A statement on Sunday by the NDLEA Director, Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, said the suspect was traced to a popular Pentecostal church on Mike Ajari Street, Ojodu Berger, Ikeja, Lagos, on Sunday, August 15, 2021, when he was arrested soon after he stepped out of the service.

According to the NDLEA, the arrest followed the interception of a consignment of illicit drugs weighing 69.65kg going to the UK through the Lagos airport on Thursday, August 12, 2021.

“The illegal baggage had been sent to the airport for export through a freight forwarding company, which in turn gave a driver to deliver at the NAHCO export shed. Following the arrest of the driver, follow up operations and investigations later revealed the true identity of the actual owner of the consignment, Stephen Afam Ikeanyionwu, who was arrested three days later in a sting operation,” Babafemi said.

Also at the Lagos airport, NDLEA operatives reportedly arrested an Italy-bound passenger, Abibu Miminu, during the outward clearance of passengers on an Ethiopian Airways flight to Italy via Addis-Ababa for allegedly ingesting illicit drugs.

While under observation at the agency’s facility between Saturday, August 14, and Sunday, August 15, 2021, the trafficker reportedly excreted 68 wraps of heroin in three excretions, all weighing 800grams.

Meanwhile, a South Africa returnee, Obi Samuel, was also last Sunday arrested at the Lagos airport during the inward clearance of Ethiopian airlines from Addis-Ababa, for importing 58g of skunk into Nigeria.

Prophetess, woman sentenced to life imprisonment for killing lover with poison

A Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has convicted and sentenced two women, Onyema Worlu, and Edina Lovelyn-Worleru, to life improvement for causing the death of a man, Israel Georgewill.

Lovelyn-Worleru, a prophetess in a church in Rumuche community, in the Emohua Local Government Area of the state, was said to have prepared a poisonous substance in the name of love portion for Worlu to put in the food of her boyfriend, Georgewill, in 2012.

The trial judge, Justice Adolphus Enebeli, in his judgment after over nine years of legal battle, found the two guilty of the crime and convicted them.

The judge held that the prosecution proved its case and that the statements of the first defendant, Worlu, at the police station were voluntarily given.

In the statement, the convict admitted that she administered the love potion as prepared by the prophetess in order to get financial assistance from Georgewill, adding that never knew it would result in his death.

Enebeli, after considering the facts presented by the parties, convicted and sentenced the two women to life imprisonment without any fine option.

The prosecutor, Chidi Ekah, said the judgment was not only justice for the deceased and his family, but also for the state and Nigeria at large.

He said, “I am happy that this matter has come to an end. It does not mean that I am happy that somebody’s life will be wasted in prison. We do not take delight in that, but the law must take its course. After all, somebody was killed and so the law says if you kill, this is the punishment for you.

“The court was even magnanimous enough to reduce it from murder to manslaughter. I am happy that justice has been served.”

But counsel for the first defendant, Vincent Chukwu, said his team would appeal the judgment.

Twitter ban is not just about losing billions of naira
Twitter ban is not just about losing billions of naira
The Twitter ban in Nigeria by the Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) regime has stretched for more than 100 days, and the issue still comes up mostly as a matter of economic loss. When we focus on how much money Nigeria has lost due to the ban, we risk overlooking the crucial aspect of the regime’s persistence in maintaining an ill-advised policy. This is not to say the economic angle is insignificant; it is. According to NetBlocks Cost of Shutdown Tool, an agency that tracks the economic impact of the disruption of internet activities, Nigeria loses an estimated $60m daily due to the Twitter ban. That is no mean sum. Even if Nigeria were to reverse the ban, we would never recoup that loss….
