Fuel Scarcity Hits Rivers State

Scarcity of petroleum products has hit Rivers State as stakeholders in the oil and gas sector down tools over seizure of their truck by operatives of the Nigerian Army, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps and the Rivers State Taskforce on Street Trading, Illegal Motor parks.

LEADERSHIP Friday gathered that commercial vehicle operators have increased their fares by 100 percent, while commuters have resorted to trekking due to increase in the transport fare.

A visit to some of the filling stations in Port Harcourt, showed that petroleum products were being sold in jerry cans.

A meeting between the Rivers State government and the leadership of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) and other state holders, ended in deadlock.

Speaking on the development, Rivers State Commissioner for Energy and Natural Resources, Dr. Peter Medeh, said national leaders of the National Union of Petroleum and Gas Senior Workers (NUPENG) and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, will be part of a fresh meeting.
