Some police officers led by one Inspector A. O. Alaka harassed and allegedly arrested ladies in a commercial bus for talking about the #OccupyLekkiTollGate protest and the arrest of the protesters.

The PUNCH gathered that the incident, which has led to an outrage on social media, happened around the Maryland area of Lagos State on Saturday.

In a video obtained by The PUNCH, Inspector Alaka was seen asking other passengers in the bus to alight and ordering the driver not to move.

He was also seen restricting the movement of the ladies as he sought assistance from other persons, suspected to be police officers.

Our correspondent gathered that about 10 police officers later joined him at the scene of the incident.

In the ensuing conversation, the ladies protested the policeman’s action as they challenged him to state their offence.

“Why should I come down? What happened? I have not gotten to my bus stop. You should talk to me politely. Tell us what we did,” one of the ladies shouted.

The officer, who held one of the ladies to prevent her from escaping, said, “You are abusing the Nigerian police”.

Reacting, the Compliant Response Unit of the Nigerian Police, tweeted, “PoliceNG_CRU has taken necessary action regarding the complaint.”

Narrating the incident in a series of tweets, Slim Bullet @Stargious, one of the ladies involved, said, “This happened today (Saturday), a police officer said we were insulting him earlier this evening because we were talking about the protests and how @mrmacaronii and others have been treated badly by the @PoliceNG.

“We didn’t even realise he was on the same bus till my friend got down and he held her and said we would have to come down and follow him to the station for just talking (since when did they take away our freedom of speech?)

“This man called other police officers standing at the Maryland bus stop and they all came around to further harass us.

“He was going to break my phone so I stopped recording, and we literally had to apologise for talking. In Nigeria, we had to apologise for just talking about the #EndSARS and #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest, we were not even actively involved.”

Slim Bullet explained that it took the intervention of bystanders to save them from passing the night in the police cell.

“I’m sorry I didn’t mention earlier that the bystanders were actually the ones who started begging all the police officers on our behalf and also stopped them from taking the three of us to the cell tonight. Also, they were more than 10 officers there. He wasn’t alone.”

Many Nigerians, on social media, have condemned the police officers’ actions.

One of them, @seun_ade24, said, “The officer went overboard.”

“The day the rights of other citizens are respected by the government and security agencies, that’s when Nigeria can be a better place that we all wish. Why on earth does he want to take the ladies to the station? Oh! Just for criticising the government!” @youngpey added.

Taita @simingi “@PoliceNG are gradually trying to censor our freedom and tell us how to talk, think and behave.”

Amanda @amandaergoyoga said, “This is disgusting! So, people can’t talk now? I think people need to truly wake up from slumber. All this violence will only breed further violence and pain, if they don’t stop all this rubbish.”

Aisha Yesufu: We Are Used To A President Whose Words Mean Nothing

The co-convener of the Bring Back Our Girls group, Aisha Yesufu, has criticised President Muhammadu Buhari over his handling of the increasing spate of abductions in the country.

When asked on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, what she thinks of the President’s assurance to Nigerians about efforts being made to rescue all those who have been abducted, Mrs Yesufu said: “what I make of the statement is absolutely nothing”.

“We are used to a president whose words mean nothing. He says one thing, and another thing happens,” she added.

Since one of the major abductions in the country happened in 2014 – (the abduction of over 200 schoolgirls in Chibok, Borno State), Yesufu has been at the forefront of the calls made to the Federal Government to ensure the release of all abductees as well as to curb the rate of insecurity in the country.

Speaking of the abduction of 317 female students at the Jangebe Government Girls Secondary School in Zamfara State on Friday, she said the President’s body language had been an enabler to the perpetrators.

“The body language of President Muhammadu Buhari enables the terrorists. They know that we have an ineffective President and Commander-In-Chief, we have an incompetent one a clueless one, who does not even bother about what is happening in the country”, the BBOG Co-convener said.

“Yesterday we buried seven military officers, the best that we have, the nation was in mourning and the President was a few minutes away from where they were and the president didn’t even turn up, what does that signify? It Is high time we begin to make serious demands on the president”.

“This is such a sad moment especially with the fact that our government has not learnt anything in spite of almost seven years of advocacy that we’ve been calling on the government to do the right thing and to do the needful to ensure that the citizens are protected.

“Before the Chibok Girl’s abduction, there was actually the Guniyadi killings where 29 boys were slaughtered in their schools”.

Speaking about what steps should be taken, Yesufu said “It is not in our place to give the way forward. His (the President’s) salaries are being paid for it, his needs are being taken care of. He was voted to give the way forward.

– She told the Court that she loved her husband dearly and never believed why he could do such a thing.

– When the Court asked the man what he had to say in response to his wife’s position, the Man categorically told the court that he was not going to change his mind as his decision was final.
He went on to tell the Court that he had enough from his wife who was too lazy to do house chores leaving everything to be done by the maid.

– On two occasions, Elders had sat them down in trying to help matters but there had been no change.
All what the wife did at home was just busy issuing instructions to their maid whilst she would be seated carried away with the phone.
The hubby further told the Court that even during on weekends when not working, his wife would never bother to cook for him his favorite meals as she used to do in the early days of their marriage, but would instead get busy preparing herself to go attend Kitchen Party Committees, coming back drunk in some cases a thing she never used to do in the past.

So in as far as he was concerned, the maid was now going to be his wife since she was the one who was being asked to do everything at home including caring for the kids.

Marriage was dissolved since the Court had nothing much they could do.
