Nigerians Consistently Deceived By Buhari Govt – Cardinal Onaiyekan
Former Archbishop of the Catholic Diocese of Abuja, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, has said President Muhammadu Buhari’s admittance that Nigerians don’t trust his government is a positive step.
The clergyman stated this while reacting to Buhari’s Christmas message when he featured on a Channels Television programme.
Onaiyekan attributed the rising public distrust in Buhari’s administration to widespread deceit being peddled on numerous occasions.
“It is positive that President Buhari recognises that his government has a heavy liability of trust deficits and it is not good for a nation that the citizens cannot trust their government so that even when the government is trying to do the right thing, there is always the feeling, ‘let us wait and see, maybe it’s one of those things again’ which means to speak truth to power, our government must take a look at its modus operandi, its way of operation,” he said.
“Up till now, they ought to be able to know why is it that they have a trust deficit, why is it that people don’t seem to want to trust them. If you ask me basically, you trust someone who is truthful but if you have too many cases of government saying one thing and doing perhaps another, the recipe for a trust deficit.”
Buttressing his point, the Catholic cleric cited the current administration’s claim that Boko Haram has been defeated even when the deadly sect continues to kill Nigerians.
He continued: “We’ve heard a lot said about fake news, about massive deceit, this is not correct and if for example, we were told that the Boko Haram has been defeated and they are still on, people will ask, what do you mean, are you serious so that any time again there is announcement on Boko Haram, people will say, well we wait and see until we are really sure which means we have a task before us and government ought to take that seriously and all those who speak on behalf of government should believe in the sacredness of the truth.
“Nigerians are ready to listen to the truth but when they are consistently deceived, it is neither good for the government nor good for the governed. Here, everyone has to do an examination of conscience. I throw the ball therefore back at not only President Buhari himself but all those who are with him running the affairs of this nation. We will be really happy to have a government to trust.”
Onaiyekan said meaningful development has been elusive in the country because the leaders have refused to demonstrate the needed political will to engineer change.
He called on Buhari to address the widespread insecurity in the country, adding that people can only trust their leaders when they are matching words with actions.

A cleric, Chris McDouglas Omosokpea of Peculiar Generation Assembly Church, Oshodi, Lagos, who is facing a charge for the rape of his member’s teen daughter has allegedly sold his church building and fled to an unknown place to establish another church.
Omosokpea, who was arrested in June 2020 by officers of the Makinde Police Station where the family of the victim reported the matter, was granted bail on health grounds before the Lagos High Court.
It was gathered that the pastor had allegedly s£xually abused a 14-year-old girl for the past four years before he was arrested and charged before the court for defilement.
The case came up again on Tuesday before the Presiding Magistrate, Kubeinje, at Ogba Magistrates Court, Lagos, but Omosokpea was conspicuously absent while the complainant and some members of his church were present. The matter was adjourned till April 21, 2021.
The pastor’s decision to dispose of the church shocked his members, who went there, only to see that the structure had been pulled down by the new buyer.
Some members of the church expressed their shock over how Omosokpea sold the church without informing them after he had convinced them that he was innocent of the allegation of defilement.
Before he was arrested, the victim claimed the pastor deceived her with fake prophecies and she kept the abuses away from her parents, who had been members of the church for over 12 years, with a strong belief that Pastor Douglas was a real man of God.
However, when she could no longer bear it, she started threatening to commit suicide over the trauma and was persuaded to open up on what she was passing through.
It was then she opened up and told her parents that Pastor Douglas had abused her for the past four years and instilled fear into her not to tell anyone.
SaharaReporters learnt that Omosokpea had allegedly established another church in an undisclosed location at Lekki, Lagos.
About 20 youths in Kogi State on Monday night beat a Pastor to Coma, over the latter’s refusal to allow Masquerade perform in his church.
Pastor Michael Samson of United Evangelical Church in Iyano community under Ibaji Local Government Area of Kogi State, North Central, Nigeria was reportedly beaten around 11pm on Monday night.
It was reported that the trouble started when Pastor Samson denied the Youths access into his church with their Masquerade during their ceremony in the day.
The youths who felt angered by the Pastor’s action returned at night with dangerous objects to beat the pastor when he was fast asleep.
The Pastor was later rushed to Idah General hospital where he is receiving treatment.
It was gathered that the incident had been reported to Police Division in Onyedega under Ibaji Local Government Area and the Police are currently working to ensure the culprits are made to face justice.
Commotion as man donates his family house to Christ Embassy, leaving his family members at risk of being homeless
A family has come out to ask for justice after their son donated the family house as a seed to Christ Embassy in Warri, Delta state.
The abroad-based man, identified simply as Shedrack, is said to have returned to Nigeria last year and became serious with religion, to the approval of his family.
Last year, he sowed his car as a seed to the Church and his family members had no problem with it.
However, he went on to donate the family house to the church not long ago.
His family members were not aware their home had been donated until Shedrack’s father noticed men going around, viewing the property.
When the older man made enquiry, he was told the property now belongs to Christ Embassy and has been valued to be sold at 25 million Naira.
The house was built on land owned by the entire family and with money contributed by the whole family, though Shedrack contributed the lion’s share.
The house is occupied by Shedrack’s father, cousins and 4 tenants who paid rent.
The father of Shedrack said he has written to the senior pastor of Christ Embassy in Warri and he promised to take action but a month has passed and nothing has happened.
The father has now lawyered up after reporting to the police, and so has Christ Embassy.
In a statement, Shedrack’s father pleaded with the General Overseer of Christ Embassy, Chris Oyakhilome, to intervene.
