A new CNN/SSRS poll finds that former Vice President Joe Biden leads in the state of Florida by a 51% to 46% margin over President Donald Trump among registered voters.
The CNN poll follows a Quinnipiac University poll released earlier this week, which showed Biden with a 51% to 38% lead.
What’s the point: Trump hasn’t led in a single Florida poll since early March.
The fact that the polls in Florida favor Biden should be one of the biggest warning signs yet for Trump’s fledgling campaign. Yes, we still have 100 days to go, and history does suggest that the gap in Florida could close.
Still, Florida is probably the bellwether state that most meets the definition of “must win” for Trump if he wants to be elected to a second term, and he is losing there.
No Republican has won the presidency without Florida since Calvin Coolidge in 1924.
Lebanon Govt. resigns in the wake of the devastating Beirut explosion
Lebanon’s prime minister, Hassan Diab and his entire cabinet has resigned in the wake of the devastating Beirut explosion which has killed at least 160 people and left more than 6,000 injured.
In a brief televised speech, PM Diab said that the explosion that rocked Beirut last week was caused by “endemic corruption” and called for the trying those responsible for the deadly blast.
He said: “I declare today the resignation of this government. May God protect Lebanon,” repeating the last phrase three times.
According to Diab, he was taking “a step back” so he can stand with the people “and fight the battle for change alongside them.”
The prime minister blamed corrupt politicians who preceded him for the “earthquake” that has hit Lebanon.
“They (political class) should have been ashamed of themselves because their corruption is what has led to this disaster that had been hidden for seven years,” he added.
“Today we follow the will of the people in their demand to hold accountable those responsible for the disaster that has been in hiding for seven years, and their desire for real change,” he said. “In the face of this reality … I am announcing today the resignation of this government.”
The cabinet has been under increasing pressure with demonstrators demanding political change after the explosion in Beirut.
The massive explosion rocked Lebanese capital Beirut on Tuesday, August 4, killing dozens and injuring thousands of people. The explosion also destroyed so many buildings and vehicles.
Pakistan Must Engage With Israel to Save Pakistani Lives
Pakistan’s foreign policy has been incoherent and inconsistent since its inception. It has suffered from a chasm between policy and strategy, xenophobic tendencies, domestic politics interfering negatively with the foreign policy process, and vice versa – including the unsettling influence of the military on civilian politics and the outsize impact of religious groups.
Policy-makers, rather than focusing on the policy process and the outcomes, serially succumb to socio-religious pressures, intensifying policy volatility, and that volatility, read as vulnerability, opens Pakistan up to manipulation by stronger world powers.
The result is that on the issues that Pakistan flags as central to its foreign policy principles – the Kashmir issue and the rights of Palestinians – Islamabad’s achievements have been barely discernible.
While Pakistan ventured into the marshlands of jihad – a tryst with international terrorism which began in the 1980s and brought home a perpetual religious radicalization, sectarianism and Kalashnikov culture that continues to this day – India was laying the ground for diplomatic ties with Israel, a process which sped up after the disintegration of the Soviet Union.
Around the same time, unrest began in Kashmir, and Pakistan became involved with a new aspect of the on/off conflict with India. Militants were strategically rerouted to Kashmir to keep India at bay.
India to ban imports of 101 items of military equipment
India will ban the imports of 101 items of military equipment in an effort to boost indigenous production and improve self-reliance in weapons manufacturing.
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said Sunday that the government is planning to progressively implement the embargo on select military imports between this year and 2024. The list hasn’t been disclosed publicly.
“Our aim is to apprise the Indian defence industry about the anticipated requirements of the Armed Forces so that they are better prepared to realise the goal of indigenisation,” Singh wrote on Twitter. “This is a big step towards self-reliance in defence.”
In May, India announced that global companies could invest up to 74% in the country’s defense manufacturing units, up from 49%, without requiring any government approval, hoping that the new policy will attract foreign companies with high-end technologies to set up their bases in the country in collaboration with local industries.
The government had then announced that India will stop importing weapons that can be made domestically, in line with the vision to make the Indian economy self-reliant amid the coronavirus crisis.
India, a major buyer of military equipment, had depended largely on the former Soviet Union during the Cold War. But it has been diversifying its purchases by opting for U.S. equipment as well.
During President Donald Trump’s visit in February, the two countries signed a deal for India to buy more than $3 billion in advanced military equipment, including helicopters.
India was the third-biggest military spender in the world last year after the U.S and China, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute said in a report released in April.
